Clyde H. Salyers, age 88, of Freeport died at 3:05 a.m., December 11, 2021 in the Community Truman Hospice House in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
He was born September 13, 1933 in Ovapa, West Virginia; a son of the late General Washington Salyers and Mae Payne Salyers.
He retired after twenty years of service in the United States Army where he was a Sergeant First Class E-7 Marksman. After his retirement from the army he worked as the sexton for Greenmont Union Cemetery for many years. He was an avid gardener and loved to hunt on his family farm.
His wife, Gertrud Salyers, whom he met in Germany while in the army, died September 6, 2006.
He is survived by a daughter Elenore (Robert) Hall of Freeport; grandchildren: Clayton (Tricia) Allen of Gnadenhutten, Jennifer (Dan) Abrams of Freeport and Julie (Craig) Smith of Mineral City; five great-grandchildren: Joseph Smith, Kayleigh Abrams, Coulter Abrams, Jase Allen and Kaiden Walls.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Allen in 1988 and a special friend, Dorma Walls in 2020.
There are no services planned at this time. Cremation will take place and he will be buried at a later date in Greenmont Union Cemetery.
