ABOUT US

About Us

Koch Funeral Home in Freeport is owned and operated by John Louis Koch and Donna Kay Koch, both licensed Ohio funeral directors. They have lived in the funeral home since September of 1983 when they purchased the business from John’s mother. They accept families in their home / funeral home with dignity and respect. Their aim is to create a comfortable place for grieving families. This includes sharing their kitchen for coffee, children gathering in their family room, (sometimes to watch television if their parents approve) and sitting on their front porch to take a break or just get a breath of fresh air. The Kochs are both members of the Freeport Presbyterian Church. They strongly believe in the power of prayer and thank God daily for their blessings.

Our Story

Koch Funeral Home came into existence in April of 1967 when John’s parents purchased the Wilson W. McCoy Funeral Home. David H. and Sarah moved their family of five sons (John, Dave, Bob, Rick, and Pete) from Ravenna to Freeport when John was eleven years old. The funeral home also provided ambulance service to the area prior to the volunteer fire department.

At age thirteen, John realized he could benefit financially when their phone rang, helping his dad on death and ambulance calls. John has lived in the funeral home all but eight years of his life. Those eight years were spent driving truck for the coal company, getting married, having children, and taking college classes in the evenings for five years. John and Donna both attended Kent State University, Tuscarawas Campus, while both working full time. They earned enough college credits to take the Ohio State Board for Funeral Directing, and both are Ohio licensed funeral directors.

John and Donna are blessed with three amazing children and their spouses: Jacob and Amanda, Angela and Todd, and Mitchell and Shannone. Both of their sons and one daughter-in-law are licensed embalmers and funeral directors; the other three have professional jobs but not in the funeral industry. Seven grandchildren: Alexis, Seth, Lance, Cooper, Audra, Piper, and Harper complete their family.

John and Donna are the proud owners of a Horse Drawn Hearse. It was seen frequently in local parades.
